The Big E-rection Some of the best sad white dude music makers around. Favorite track: Continental Shelf.
Dustfan
Dustfan thumbnail
Dustfan One of the best albums of 2015. A literal barn burner of a psychedelic post-punk album with deep hooks and sharp jabs; perfect combinations. The build up and release on Death leaves you floating to the surface, stranded and broken. Favorite track: Continental Shelf.
Eloy Hurtado
Eloy Hurtado thumbnail
Eloy Hurtado unpredictable, misterious, reminds of early post-punk, some times noisy, some times melodious, continental shelf video is amazing, death arpeggiated stuff reminds me of siouxsie and the banshees (like cannons, song from the edge of the World), also some noisier textures remind me of juju album, newspaper spoons have some bauhaus aura Favorite track: Continental Shelf.
Tolujin

Tolujin This should be in a lot more people's collections. There are plenty of by-the-numbers post-punk outfits around right now but few of them have Preoccupations' tightness or agility or the ability to shift from psychedelic pop to folk to krautrock, sometimes within a single track. The overall tone is grey but there are enough great hooks to stop it ever feeling dour.

das7 It's these frenzied, sharp-turn transitions are what make this band feel so vital, so alive and so different.fantastic album Favorite track: Silhouettes.

about

Recorded in a barn-turned-studio in rural Ontario, the seven songs that make up 'Viet Cong' were born largely on the road, when Flegel and bandmates Mike Wallace, Scott Munro and Daniel Christiansen embarked on a 50-date tour that stretched virtually every limit imaginable. Close quarters hastened their exhaustion but also honed them as a group. You can designate records as seasonal, and you can feel Preoccupations's bleakness and declare it wintry. But the only way you get a frost is when there's something warmer to freeze up. So yes, 'Viet Cong' is a winter album, but only until it is a spring record, then a summer scorcher, then an autumn burner, then it ices over again.
